If your interest in history goes back thousands, instead of hundreds, of years, then you'll want to check out the Dinosaur Diamond Scenic Byway this summer. Collected on this geographically stunning byway's route are some of the most significant dinosaur museums and quarries in the world, including skimming by the Dinosaur National Monument, a detour absolutely worth taking.
The byway, in total, is 486 miles long, takes on average 2 - 3 days, and circles through two states - Colorado and Utah. If you're after the Dinosaur highlights of this trip, head north out of Grand Junction and up Highway 139 past Rangely towards the Dinosaur National Monument, where you can not only dig for your own dinosaur relics, but enjoy hiking, whitewater rafting and mountain biking in the impressive terrain. Travel through barren flatlands, geologically staggering rock formations on the Utah side as well as by the Dinosaur National Monument, and see the Colorado River as it turns into the most rafted river in America just outisde of the Monument.
If you're tackling this challenging byway, remember to fuel up in Grand Junction or Fruita, as the towns on the stretch of highway between Fruita and Rangely are few and far between. Always check road conditions before setting out on such a trip, and if you're going to challenge the entire byway, be sure to arrange for lodging ahead of time.
