Cave of the Winds
As the legend goes, the Arapahoe who migrated through this area around 1000 A.D spoke of a cave where the Great Spirit of the Wind resided. In the late 1800's, the modern era of the Cave of the Winds began with two brothers who stumbled on the cave while on a church outing. The rest, as they say, is history.
High on the hills above Manitou Springs, just west of Colorado Springs, you'll find a geological wonder you'd be remiss to pass by. Cave of the Winds has been one of the very few show caves - meaning safe enough to take the whole family on and run by an establishment - in Colorado for over 100 years.
Adventure inside and find not only limestone formations, stalactites and stalagmites, but the animal life that can survive only in a cave environment - fish without pigmentation in their skin, salamanders, spiders and unique creatures that make this place home. Your guide will have a wealth of information to share with you on the guided tours, as well as reiterating the strict guidelines by which you'll be allowed into such a delicate ecosystem.
When caving anywhere in Colorado, remember to respect the environment you're about to encounter, and leave nothing behind.
